Reboot for the New Year: How to Hit the Reset Button
Am I the only one that feels like this year flew by? I feel like I haven't even had time to fully process this year, yet it's almost come to an end…what a whirlwind! With 2022 wrapping up quickly, I thought it would be great to talk about a yearly reset. We all think about resetting our electronic devices when they start acting funny, but what about us? We, just like our devices, need to push the reset button every now and then. I believe that anytime is a good time for positive changes, but a new year evokes it like no other! December is a perfect month to reflect and recharge so that you can make the necessary changes to take on the new year in alignment with your priorities and as energized as ever! Join me in slowing down and resetting as we head into a brand new year
Reflect
Typically, I like to start by assessing how this year went and what I can do to improve going forward. I look back and think about all the good and bad things that have happened over the course of the year. First, I focus on my accomplishments and all that went well, allowing myself to savor the victories no matter how big or small. Next, I focus on any unmet goals. If a goal no longer aligns with my priorities, I happily let it go. There is no point in holding onto something that will steer me in the wrong direction. Next, I move on to anything that may have deeply saddened or disappointed me and allow myself to feel any lingering emotions. This is my way of leaving these things behind where they belong…in the past! Awareness is the first step towards change, and reflecting on your last year can help you move forward positively.
Detox your Mind
During this time, I also like to give my brain a break by doing a mental detox. My brain feels great when I take a break from everything that stimulates it, including the news, social media, and everything in between! Your brain needs some quiet time to recover from all the noise that inundates it on a daily basis. Did you know the average person consumes about 8 hours of digital media per day? This astounding amount of information overload leads to mental fatigue. When your mind is cluttered, it can negatively affect your physical, emotional, and mental health. Social media and technology are two main culprits for cluttering and disorganizing your mind. After disconnecting for a day or two, you'll find you use your time more effectively and can think clearly! Your brain needs quiet time to be present, allowing you to make deeper connections, create memories, and even be a little creative! So go on out there and enjoy the downtime by spending quality time with family and friends during the holidays!
Reconnect with Your Authentic Self
When was the last time you sat in silence and listened to your thoughts? If I had to make a bet, I would say it's been a while, but being in tune with your emotions and feelings is crucial to reconnect with your authentic self. You must learn to listen to what your soul needs and follow that ping. Believe me; you’ll be so pleased you did! You can start by taking a few minutes out of your day to journal your thoughts, paying close attention to how you feel and why. We tend to live on autopilot, guided by society, so we forget to acknowledge our feelings. Are you on the path you genuinely want or one led by social norms? I know reflection can be challenging, but it's the only way you'll grow from your hardships and make way for a new and improved mindset. It's important to note that you are in control of your mindset and your reactions. As Lena Horne says, "It's not the load that breaks you down, it's the way you carry it." I encourage you to get to know yourself, get reacquainted with your core values, and align your mindset with your authentic self! Doing so will make your priorities clear, so planning your year and setting goals will be much easier. You will also be more determined and motivated to keep showing up as the best version of yourself!
