Understanding the Joy of Missing Out (JOMO)

What is JOMO?

Before I talk about JOMO, it's essential to mention the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). The Urban Dictionary describes FOMO as "a state of mental or emotional strain caused by the fear of missing out." Many of us have suffered from a case of FOMO at one point or another. Social media has amplified FOMO because it makes you aware of events you miss out on! These perfectly curated social media feeds are cherry-picked to portray picture-perfect lives, leaving you feeling like you are seriously missing out.

This is where JOMO comes to the rescue by inspiring you to choose quality over quantity! It encourages you to live more intentionally and enjoy the little things that zoom by you while living in the fast lane. JOMO, or the Joy of Missing Out, is defined as "a feeling of contentment with one's own pursuits and activities, without worrying over the possibility of missing out on what others may be doing ." which is the exact opposite of FOMO. The JOMO mindset allows you to focus on your priorities and appreciate living a simpler life. As a result, you will experience greater fulfillment and excitement when you embrace people and activities that energize you rather than drain you!

What are the benefits of JOMO?

Embracing the JOMO mindset is a powerful way to take control of your life and happiness. While JOMO offers many benefits, I'd like to share a few of my favorites.

  1. Being present: JOMO drives you to examine what is genuinely essential to you, allowing you to take the guesswork out of when to be present. There is nothing more fulfilling than being mindful of what you are doing at any given moment. Being present can be challenging, but meditation can help as it reduces stress and increases happiness.

  2. Being intentional with your time: JOMO also makes it easier to become more intentional with how you spend your time. It's a way of prioritizing yourself and your well-being. Whether it's spending an evening alone, working out, journaling, or brunch - schedule it! Scheduling activities that bring you joy while learning to say "no" to those that don't is part of becoming intentional with your time.

  3. Slow down: Ahh, this one is my ultimate favorite! Slow down to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Instead of rushing to your destination, try to enjoy the journey. Don't be afraid to live in the slow lane so you can appreciate the little things. When you slow down, you can effortlessly find time to reflect, relax, and recharge so you can confidently face the day!

  4. Enhance your quality of life: JOMO is all about choosing quality over quantity, so your quality of life will inevitably increase by embracing JOMO. You'll sleep better, have deeper connections, decrease anxiety, and increase creativity, allowing you to become the best version of yourself.

How can I start feeling more JOMO in my life?

  1. Practice gratitude: Gratitude is a game changer because it turns what you have into enough! When you focus on what you have, you start to appreciate the small things. Practicing gratitude regularly can boost positive emotions and optimism. You can practice gratitude by keeping a gratitude journal or simply counting your blessings. If you start each day by expressing gratitude for one thing, you'll soon have an extensive list of things you are grateful for that you may have taken for granted in the past.

  2. Take a walk: You can go for a walk by yourself to connect with nature. Make sure you become aware of your surroundings and focus on your senses: what do you see, hear, and feel? This is a great way to connect with nature. Or you can walk with a friend or loved one you've been meaning to catch up with. A walk can reduce your stress level and leave you feeling energized.

  3. Stop multi-tasking: I know this is a hard one but trying to complete multiple tasks at once often leads to overwhelm. Focus on being present without letting your mind wander to your to-do list or that email you have yet to respond to. Allow yourself to enjoy what you are doing and let go of all the distractions. It might be hard at first, but once you get the hang of it, it will become second nature.

Living an intentional life is the essence of JOMO. The JOMO mindset encourages you to slow down, focus on what truly matters, and eliminate the rest! Now that you are more familiar with JOMO, hopefully, you'll want to try it next time you feel overwhelmed. It can take some time to get used to it, but it's totally worth it.

Ciao for now,

Sandra
