The Importance of Prioritizing Work-Life Balance

If you find it hard to juggle your career, personal life, and health, you are not alone! I'm sure you're happy to hear that because it is not an easy task. Life can get a little hectic at times, leaving you feeling stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed. Let's talk about what work-life balance actually means.

What is Work-Life Balance?

Work-life balance is essentially finding a healthy separation between your career and personal life. The idea is that once you have achieved this balance, you will be less stressed, more productive, and happy overall. Unfortunately, there isn't a secret formula that helps you find this balance because it is different for everyone.

How did we get here?

I believe "hustle culture" has much to do with the lack of work-life balance. Hustle culture is defined as the state of overworking to the point where it takes over your life. You're exerting yourself to your utmost capabilities — having no time for your personal life. When you adopt the "hustle culture," you tend to prioritize your career over everything, including your health and personal relationships. Let that sink in!

Why is Work-life balance Important?

I thought you'd never ask! Understanding the importance of achieving work-life balance is crucial because it takes work. It requires self-discipline, courage, and resilience. You will need to make tough decisions; in my experience, understanding "why" makes it a little easier. While there are many benefits, I'd like to focus on the ones I believe are most important.

1. Increased productivity: Working longer hours impacts your work quality, decreasing your productivity. Working fewer hours may sound counter-productive, but you can't produce quality work when you're exhausted. Time management skills and productivity hacks only work if you are present and can focus on the task at hand; otherwise, they're not much help. When you have a better work-life balance, you can think clearly, which results in increased productivity.

2. Improved health and well-being: It is no surprise that you jeopardize your health and well-being if you are overworked and stressed. The effects of stress range from weakening your immune system to more severe health issues like high blood pressure and heart disease.

3. Stop missing out: For many, work has become their number one priority at the cost of their personal lives. Missing out on life and relationships is not worth sacrificing for your career. When you work longer hours, you tend to miss out on all sorts of fun and exciting things because you are too exhausted to do anything. Smartphones allow work to slowly creep into your personal life, making it hard to be present. As a result, your relationships suffer because you spend less quality time with your loved ones. Remember, time is your most precious resource because you can never get it back.

Time is non-refundable. Use it with intention.

4. Happiness and fulfillment: I think happiness is the most significant benefit of having a healthy work-life balance! Can you imagine looking forward to going to work rather than dreading it? When you feel happy and fulfilled, you tend to be more productive, have a positive attitude, and reduce stress.

Where Can You Start?

1. Take care of yourself: A simple way to start taking care of yourself is by scheduling "me" time just like you would schedule a work meeting. Adding it to your calendar makes you less likely to "cancel" it. This could include self-care, hobbies, exercise, or spending time with loved ones. In other words, anything that makes you happy and healthy. Taking care of yourself allows you to show up as your best self and excel at work.

2. Know when to say no: Basically, if it's not a heck yes, then it's a no! There are respectful ways to say no, like "Now is not a good time for me but I'll let you know if anything changes." You can say no to anything you don't have time for, or that doesn't align with your priorities. This ensures you only take on what you can handle, which helps maintain a manageable workload. Also, delegate whenever possible.

3. Boundaries: Create boundaries you feel good about enforcing and stick to them as much as possible. And whatever you do, don't take work home with you. This includes thinking about work projects or responding to emails. Setting boundaries and reevaluating your workload to help you manage your time both at and away from work is absolutely essential.

4. Relax and Unwind: Now that you've made it through the workday, it's time to relax and unwind. Allow yourself to disconnect from anything work-related and focus on yourself. Go for a walk, read a book, or watch your favorite show.

Now that you are more familiar with work-life balance, I challenge you to work toward achieving a balance that works for you. Once you see how these changes enhance your overall quality of life, you'll never want to go back to your old ways!

Ciao for now,

Sandra
